The good news is that we’re here to help. We’ll take the stress out of feeding your new canine companion by helping you learn more about this breed’s eating needs. Read on to learn more about the perfect mini goldendoodle feeding schedule.
What Is a Mini Goldendoodle?
It’s important to know what a mini goldendoodle is before diving into what their feeding schedule looks like. While you might be familiar with the standard goldendoodle, you’ll find that mini goldendoodles are often different. Not only are they smaller, hence the name, but even their health, genetics, and feeding schedule will have a lot of variation when compared to their standard goldendoodle counterparts.
That said, this miniature breed isn’t as small as many other small dog breeds. Since you’re still getting the results of breeding between a golden retriever and a miniature poodle, most mini goldendoodles tend to be around 14-17 inches at the shoulder and around 25 to 35 pounds in weight.
Mini Goldendoodle Feeding Schedule
Mini goldendoodles have different feeding schedules depending on their age and development. For example, a puppy needs to eat more food frequently to sustain their growth.
Failing to feed them the right amount can stunt their growth and result in other health problems. On the other hand, older mini goldendoodles, like senior dogs, might need to eat less food to avoid ending up overweight, which leads to health problems. We break down what the ideal mini goldendoodle feeding schedule is below to ensure that you don’t miss a beat when it’s time for them to eat.
Mini Goldendoodle Puppy Feeding Schedule
The mini goldendoodle puppy’s feeding schedule varies based on how old they are and how far along they are in their development. When they’re newborns or around eight to twelve weeks, make sure you feed them up to four times daily for a total of around half a cup of mini goldendoodle puppy food.
As they get older, at around the four to five-month age range, it’s time to slow down a bit and start feeding three times daily for a total of about three-quarters of a cup to one full cup of mini goldendoodle puppy food.
In their final puppy stages, six to twelve months old, you can increase their food intake to 1.5 to 2.5 cups daily and reduce their feeding schedule to twice daily. During this time you can start to switch them over to adult mini goldendoodle dog food.
Adult Mini Goldendoodle Feeding Schedule
The adult mini goldendoodle feeding schedule is a lot less complicated than the one we covered for puppies. Fully grown mini goldendoodles have to eat between 1.5 and 2.5 cups of food daily depending on their exercise levels. This food should be fed to them twice daily; once in the morning and once in the evening.
Feeding them treats throughout the day is also helpful to curb their appetite if you notice that they want to get at their food bowl more than twice daily. That said, you can also feed them three smaller meals if they seem to prefer that routine.
Elderly Mini Goldendoodle Feeding Schedule
Last but not least, we can’t forget about elderly mini goldendoodles. While these dogs are often the same height and weight as their younger counterparts, they may begin to slow down. For example, they may exercise less or their thyroid might start to make them feel more lethargic if they develop health conditions like hypothyroidism.
Therefore, you may want to reduce their food intake to around one or two cups daily instead. This is dependent on weight gain, energy levels, and several other factors, so keep this in mind before putting your old friend on a doggy diet.
Understanding Your Mini Goldendoodle’s Feeding Schedule
Feeding your mini goldendoodle will change as they grow from a puppy to an older dog, so make sure you understand how often and what to feed them during every state of their life. The one thing that does remain constant is the type of food they should be eating.
Always make sure you’re using the best dog food for this breed. This will help you avoid complications and ensure that you can stick to a healthy mini goldendoodle feeding schedule.
